A Look Back to Go Forward
Creativity evolves; by definition it can’t be stationary.
As part of an overhaul of this entire site I reviewed blog posts from the very beginning. My writing in those early posts is cringeworthy and the punctuation is downright atrocious. But the sentiments still ring true. Recent followers may not even be aware; the original purpose of this blog was to alert subscribers that the latest weekly instalment of the Contentment is for Cows comic strip had been posted. I would write a few sentences on being creative followed by the link to the comic. I had a lot of good things to say about developing one’s creativity; what it takes in terms of time, commitment, and the willingness to get over the fear of judgement to share one’s work publicly.
Here is an early example should you be so curious.
When I stopped drawing the comics I made the choice to continue to write the blog. I’ve covered a variety of topics and personal stories; family, grief, cancer, online dating, books, opinions, relationships–whatever was on my mind. It’s evolved into a public journal as my life changed from working full-time, caretaking, widowhood, to my current circumstances. A lot of life can occur over a decade; it feels distinctly blurry when I reflect on those years.
I really did not consider myself to be a creative person until I began writing the comic strip. Now, alongside the ten chapters of my “sitcom on paper,” as I like to call it, I have eleven years of blog posts, ten short stories, a few personal essays, and I’ve completed the editing of my mother’s diaries. Recently, the editor of the magazine, Embracing Change reached out and a selected blog post is being published monthly.
It’s a privilege to be allowed into your mailbox every week. The evolution continues; fiction writing is taking over. I will be busy getting the diary launched, (coming soon), and I have an idea for a novel brewing in the back of my mind. I can’t think of a better place to share these journeys than right here at Contentment is for Cows.
Keep your joy.

Well said. Well done. The courage to ‘learn in public’ is admirable, encouraging, and a great example. Glad you’ve made these choices.
Thank you Judith. That’s a good way to put it — “learning in public.”
